The north-western state of Rajasthan is home to the famous Ranthambore National Park, named after the historic Ranthambore fortress in the park. Situated in the Sawai Madhopur district, this is about 130 kms from the state capital of Jaipur.
Ranthambore was established as the Sawai Madhopur Game Sanctuary in 1955 by the government of India and was declared as one of the project tiger reserves in 1973. Ranthambore became a national park in 1980. The park covers an area of 392 sq kms set between the Aravali and Vindhya ranges. The terrain comprises of dense tropical dry forest, open bushland and rocky terrain inter spread with lakes and streams. Ranthambore wildlife shelter is legendary for its tigers and is one of the greatest places in India to see these grand predators in the forest. Tigers can be simply covered even during the day Ttme. excellent time to visit Ranthambore National park is in November and May when the environment of the dry deciduous forests makes sightings general. Its deciduous forests were once a piece of the magnificent jungles of middle India. Ranthambore national park has a variety of flora which mainly belong to the dry deciduous type. Various activities are carried out at the park which include special tiger tours, birdwatching tours etc.
